London Modest Fashion Week: A Fashion Revolution
On the 18th
and 19th of February 2017, history was made as the first ever
London Modest Fashion Week (LMFW) was held at the Saatchi Gallery.
The show
hosted by Haute Elan featured collections from 40 modest fashion designers from across the globe and
a showcase including various Middle-Eastern fashion brands and investor
workshops.
The LMFW is a unique addition
to the London Fashion calendar as the designs are of a demure nature.
Anosha
Anwari, who represented Iila said: “I love fashion but I want to be covered up and modest fashion allows me
to feel attractive.”
Modest
Fashion is mainly targeted at Muslim women, as the Islamic religion requires
women to dress modestly.
Aurora
Paillard, senior lecturer in Psychology of Fashion at the London College of Fashion said: “I personally think that people, in
particular in London, see the Muslim woman’s dress choice as a personal fashion
choice.
Hijabs have become part of the Fashion
industry, Fashion trends and even Fashion art.”
Muslim women may be the main target audience of LMFW but the clothes can be worn by anyone regardless of their faith.
Feradje designer, Feradje said: "I design my clothes to be worn by everyone and it gives me joy to see people wearing my clothes."
The LMFW
hopes to be an event for years to come and put modest fashion on the map.
The CEO of Haute Elan, Romanna
Bint-Abubaker said: “It acted as an industry catalyst for the global fledgling
modest fashion industry, bringing into the mainstream highlights of modest
fashion – culture and elegance.”
One of the
LMFW organizers Najice Basaran said: “We are putting modest fashion on the map
and bringing to light a demographic the industry has ignored for too long.”
The LMFW comes at a time were there have been controversies affecting Muslims across the globe and the LMFW aims to be a positive response to Islamophobia.
